Understanding the Scope 3 Estimator

  • Updated

This article explains how we estimate your upstream Scope 3 Category 1 emissions using a hybrid methodology. It details how your goods/services selection and the amount supplied to customers help us calculate emissions, as well as how the Exiobase3 emission factors are applied.

Why add a scope 3 estimate?

Your goods/services selection and amount supplied to each of your customers, helps us to provide your customer(s) with a good picture of their Scope 3 Category 1 emissions.

You can find it in the Measurements section - entering these figures will be part of your annual data submission (see the guide below for more).

This way, you and your customer(s) have;

  • an accurate picture of your Scope 1 and 2 emissions
  • an estimate of your upstream Scope 3 emissions.

We use a hybrid methodology to calculate your upstream Scope 3 emissions and to do this, we need to know the amount of goods and services provided to your customer each year.

How is this calculated?

The platform's emissions factors are provided by the Exiobase3 multi-regional environmentally Extended Input-Output Table. At this time, they are broad industries, and as such are only used for estimates.

They estimate impacts of land use, energy inputs, and CO2e of the finished good/service described, ‘cradle to gate'.

This process follows the hybrid methodology in the GHG Protocols Scope 3 Category 1 framework for your customers. At this time, they are high level, but this will be built on over time to improve the granularity of factors provided.

I have different emissions factors I want to use

If you have calculated your own emissions factors for goods or services, please let us know by submitting a ticket, stating the emissions factor and your evidence of quality.

If your customer has specific product data on cradle-to-gate emissions relating to your site, the platform will display these factors automatically once the customer has entered them.
