What is Mobile Combustion?

  • Updated

This guide details how to report emissions from fuel consumption by vehicles owned or leased by your company. It covers the calculation of emissions, how to use the GHG tool and guidance on entering accurate data for mobile combustion sources.

Understanding the impact of mobile combustion on your emissions

This data field covers fuel consumption by all vehicles that are owned or leased by the company that are relevant to your submission for your respective customer, including but not limited to cars, trucks, planes and boats.

The emissions are only calculated for the use of the fuel within the control of the company. The emissions are purely for the burning of the fuel and do not include emissions from fuel production.

Employee commuting, employee travel, and upstream/ downstream third-party transportation emissions, such as those associated with transporting material inputs or product distribution, are considered scope 3 indirect emissions (GHG Protocol - Technical Guidance for Calculating Scope 3 Emissions) and are not included in the scope of this data.

Examples of what is included are: Forklift trucks, shunt trucks, construction equipment other non-Road Equipment, freight trains, commercial aircraft and boats. If you use diesel for mobile plant and you use the GHG tool, don't add the diesel to the energy fields in the platform.

How to calculate emissions

To calculate your CO2 emissions you can use the GHG calculation tool which can be found here. For full guidance and a list of gases to include, see the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (US EPA) Greenhouse Gas Inventory Guidance Direct Emissions from Mobile Combustion Sources.

Once you have downloaded the Excel tool,

  • Navigate to the tab labelled as “Activity Data”.
  • Work your way from left to right, filling out each column as you go.

Please be aware that some data is already populated within this sheet as an example. Care should be taken to overwrite this data with your own. For individual sites, you can ignore the facility tab as this column is not relevant.

Action List to fill out "Activity Data"

  • For your reference, you can fill out the column labelled Source Description to make your spreadsheet easier to navigate after you have filled it out. For example, fill out the description as 'company cars'.
  • Select the Region from the drop down boxes.
  • Select Mode of Transport from the drop down boxes.
  • For Scope, Select "Scope 1" from the drop down boxes. Because the emissions from your owned and leased vehicles count as your Scope 1 emissions.
  • Select Type of Activity Data along with Vehicle Type from the drop-down boxes.
  • Now you have to input the activity amount based against the Type of Activity Data. If you have selected Distance Activity for you will be inputting in your distance calculations (km, miles etc.). If you have selected Fuel Use, you will be inputting fuel volumes (litres, gallons etc.). Ensure your Activity Amount and Unit of Fuel Amount match up. Don’t mix up litres and kilometres!
  • Once you have done this, the cells under GHG emissions will automatically populate and give you the emissions for different GHGs.
  • Use the output from 'Total GHG Emissions, exclude Biofuel CO2' to enter into the mobile combustion field on the M2030 platform.
