Adding Products

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you will:

  1. Know where to find the Product Catalogue in the PCF tool.
  2. Be comfortable providing the details to create a product.
  3. Be able to import a product list to the M2030 platform.
  4. Be able to manually add individual products to the M2030 platform.

Products

Products are either individual items or groups of similar items your organization manufactures.

💡 You must first add a product to the Product Catalogue to build a PCF

In the M2030 platform:

  • The Product Catalogue is defined at the organizational level.

  • Individual PCFs are created at the facility level.

  • For multiple PCFs, uploading a product list is more efficient.

  • For 1-2 PCFs, manual product entry may be simpler.

Import Products

Steps to import your product list:

  1. Download the product upload template at the bottom of this article.
  2. Complete the template (refer to the guide below).
  3. Upload the completed template to the M2030 platform.

💡 Work through this guide alongside the platform when adding a product for the first time.

Populating the import Excel file

Please ensure that for a new import, you download the latest version of the upload file from this article rather than a previously stored copy, as periodic updates are made to the Excel file.

  • In the product name column - enter product name used within your organization.

  • In the product ID column - enter the reference ID used for the product within your organization.

  • In the product description column - provide a description of the product, including information such as:

    • Production technology;

    • Whether you will be including packaging in the materials you will be adding to this PCF (i.e. whether this PCF includes packaging data, too);

    • Any other comments you might require internally, for referencing this PCF within your organization

  • Enter whether the product is an individual product or a group of similar products.

    In the template rows:

Enter 1 or TRUE if it is an individual product

Enter 0 or FALSE if it is a group of similar products (i.e. a category or family)

  • In the product measurement unit column, enter the unit that you would use to count individual products.

    For example:

    • "L" of a chemical

    • "kg" of crops

    Accepted options include:

    • Mass: kg, t (metric), lb, t (US)

    • Volume: m3, L, CCF, ft3, lmp. gallon, MCF, US gallon

    • Distance: m, km, ft

    • Area: m2, ft2

  • In the product weight (kg) per product measurement unit column - add the mass amount per unit of product measurement.

Note: Leave empty if using a mass-based 'Product measurement unit'

If you are using a unit that is not mass-based, e.g. m2, you need to enter the weight of the product in kg, per ‘product measurement unit’.

Here are some useful calculators to help with this conversion:

  • In the optional UN CPC Product category code column - enter the CPC code for the product.

Why is CPC (Central Product Classification) code being asked for?

CPC is a mandatory requirement for reporting under the WBCSD PACT Pathfinder Framework, which the M2030 tool has been built to align with.

Need help finding the corresponding CPC code?

To find your Product's CPC code, visit this link, from here you can download the latest manual and classification which will list all of the CPC codes which can be searched.

As of July 2024, codes from version 2.1 should be used.

Make sure to delete the example rows before you upload your completed file into the M2030 Platform!

What to expect after importing your product list?

  • The process may take a few minutes.
  • A confirmation email will be sent once the import is successful.
  • Check your spam folder if you don’t see the email in your inbox.
